7 Super Shots

I was recently tagged by Philadelphia-based photographer Christian Carollo (whose photos of Philadelphia are absolutely stunning)  in the latest photo project from HostelBookers called 7 Super Shots. Each participant selects photos from their travels that best fit seven categories. Though challenging to narrow down, these are my picks:

1| A photo that takes my breath away

Paris, ma ville.

It’s hard to believe I took this well over a year ago from the balcony of Susan’s suite at the Westin but the view, with its figurine-like people and iron beacon, never ceases to tug at my heart.

2| A photo that that makes me laugh or smile

No trumpeting?

No trumpeting? That was my initial reaction when I saw this no-honking sign in Shanghai. I know I perplexed the group of street vendors who watched me snap the photo but my fellow travelers and I had a good laugh.

3| A photo that makes me dream

Toulouse

Well, two photos. Of the places I traveled in 2011, Toulouse made the most lasting impression. The emblematic exposed brick, the warm-colored buildings and narrow streets charmed in ways I hadn’t felt since my first trip to France. A city big enough to get lost a few times but small enough to know your neighbors.

4| A photo that makes me think

morning shadow

Of insouciant vacation and morning optimism.

5| A photo that makes my mouth water

Verjus buttermilk fried chicken

I may not have grown up eating much fried food but you don’t need prior experience to know that these bits of buttermilk fried chicken from Verjus will literally seduce your taste buds. Tender, juicy meat that melts in the mouth with a perfectly crisp exterior. You might scoff at the idea of eating American comfort food in Paris but if it’s well executed and bring you joy I say, why not?

6| A photo that tells a story

joy

My father-in-law, Wall Street, June 2011.  This shot could easily fall under the category “a photo that makes me smile” because I can’t help but light up a bit whenever I see it. The summer of 2011 will forever symbolize my in-law’s very first visit to the United States, as much an eye-opening experience for them as it was for me. New York City performed as I expected, evoking equal parts shock and awe. Gazing up at the Manhattan skyline, surrounded by tour groups and business suits, I believe my father-in-law felt both.

7| A photo that I am most proud of

Standing tall: Forbidden City, Beijing

The blustering wind made all attempts at focused photography difficult but my eyes were locked on the guard’s calculated movements. I wanted to capture this beautiful moment of orderly procession but I was quickly losing feeling in my fingers. Seemingly anticipating my intentions, the third guard turned in my direction and my finger instantly released.
