Get Inspired: The European Independent Film Festival

This past weekend marked the 6th annual European Independent Film Festival and I was invited to attend film screenings, which included student films, and  meet artists from not only all corners of Europe but from the States as well. 77 films from 26 different countries showcased over 3 days; a flawlessly organized event celebrating a passion and talent for film. I know very little about film, neither technically nor artistically, but indie films always blow me away. The films I viewed during the festival were no exception. Some were a bit more morose than I anticipated for a brilliantly sunny Saturday afternoon, but I’m so glad to have gotten the opportunity to participate. Here are a few of the films I screened (if viewing this post in an email, click HERE to see the films mentioned).

{Little White Lies}

“Two young brothers, both in temporary foster care, look forward to a picnic with Mum, however the unexpected arrival of Mums new boyfriend Greg has unforeseen and dramatic consequences. What do the boys recognize in Greg that Mum cannot? Does the family need protecting from this stranger? A chance event gives the boys an opportunity to solve the problem but will they make the right decision?” (ECU Festival)

{A. Hitler}

“Little White Lies” definitely left the audience with an uncomfortable aftertaste but was perhaps nowhere near as intense as the director’s cut of the American film from “The Empty Mirror” (1996) entitled “A. Hitler”, a two hour look into the darkest recesses of Hitler’s mind and delusional fantasies. Unnecessarily esoteric at times but nonetheless a terrifying portrayal of Hitler by British actor Norman Rodway.

{Bubbles}

Much more of a hopeful, feel-good short student film from Israel, “Bubbles” follows Shira from Tel Aviv who is waiting for her husband to return from a business trip. “The tiring monotony of her everyday life is about to change and she is facing a crucial turning point”. I think the trailer does an excellent job and hooking you in I think it’s safe to say the festival was a huge success and I hope some of the films presented will end up with wide distribution.

Keep on Keepin On…

I’ll leave you with this video from filmmakers who attended the festival and were asked to provide their essential tips for up-and-coming independent filmmakers. All of their suggestions apply to creative endeavors and passions of all kinds. Makes me want to go out there and CREATE something!

{Thank you to the ECU team for their hard work and for inviting me! It was truly a wonderful experience}
